Everybody loves a traditional granny square and without doubt they are one of our favourites, there are many different variations and methods of making them. We have lots of questions about how we make ours. We don’t chain between our trebles and we mainly only have one chain in our corners. Many of our patterns are made from granny squares, and we include a full photo tutorial. One of our most popular is our granny square mitten pattern, which uses just 4 granny squares to make a pair of mittens, with some “rib”stitches to form the cuffs, and is the ideal project for using up small amounts of yarn. There is 10% off the pattern in our Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/uk/SewHappyCreative/listing/591268953/granny-square-crochet-patternwrist until Sunday 29th September 2019.
Here’s how we make our Granny Squares.( instructions in brackets are worked into the same space)
UK English (US)
ch = chain (chain)
ss= slip stitch (slip stitch)
tr = treble (double crochet)
sp = space (space)
st = stitch. (stitch)
Foundation Round (using any dk yarn) Make a magic loop or chain 5, ss to join into a ring. We make our squares with a magic loop.
Round 1 Into the magic loop or ring ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr, ch1, *3tr, ch1,* repeat from *to* twice more, ss to join into beg ch-3, fasten off. (4 x 3tr clusters and 4x ch-1sp, these ch-1sp’s, form the corners of your square)
Round 3 Attach a new colour in any corner ch-1sp of round 2, ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr, ch1, 3tr in same ch-1sp, 3tr in the sp between your corners *(3tr, ch1 , 3tr,) in ch-1 corner sp, 3tr, in next sp* repeat from * to * around to complete your round, ss to join into beg ch-3, fasten off.
Round 4 Attach a new colour in any corner ch-1sp of round 3, ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr, ch1, 3tr, in same ch-1sp, 3tr in each sp between your corners *(3tr, ch1, 3tr,) in ch-1 corner sp, 3tr, in each sp between your corners* repeat from * to * around, ss to join into beg ch-3, fasten off.
Repeat round 4 to add rounds to your granny square, we like to flip our square over each round from right side and wrong side, this helps to keep your square straight and prevent your square from “twisting”. Happy Crocheting 🧶💕
